The hallway is way too often ignored when decorating… it is a space that is passed through so often, it deserves to have some attention! Since hallways tend to be small spaces, you don’t want to clutter or close it in, but you do want to add interest. It doesn’t have to be a boring, utilitarian space! Make sure you and your loved ones enjoy passing through… decorate your hallway! After all, isn’t life the journey, not the destination? 🙂
Our first hallway decorating idea is from ‘Emma’s Design‘. This is a hallway idea that can be done on a budget. Thrift store frames with character, all painted a fresh white… That’s it! We can all handle that!
From ‘Houzz‘ this is a clean and open hallway design using B&W photos and white frames to tie the space together, yet not close it in. Keeping all the photography in B&W gives an artsy feel to the space, and the grey walls warm it up. Using wide white picture frame mats helps keep a bright look as well.
From ‘GTH Architects‘, this is great hallway decorating idea for making the most of a small pass through space… Add storage! This could easily be DIY’ed by installing pre made bookcase style cabinets, headboard and coat hooks. Finish with some trim to create a built in look.
All the interest doesn’t have to go up on the walls… The visual path in a hallway is naturally drawn on the floor because of the long narrow nature of the space, so when you decorate a hallway, make the floor interesting. Consider using carpet of flooring squares like these from ‘Flor‘ to create a custom look pathway to other parts of the house. Placing these on the diagonal, using highly textured squares and carrying it all the way down the hall are all effective ways to treat a hallway space.
From ‘British 91 Magazine’ through ‘Happy Interior Blog‘, this hallway shows how you can add storage just about anywhere. These cabinets are not very deep to allow passage through the hallway, but still add much needed storage space. Oh, and there is always room for pretty flowers, everywhere!
Ok, now this, is, cool. ‘Kristen Duke‘ shows us how to make a textured wall smooth… why? So she can show you how she made her hallway chalkboard! Oh my, this is a great hallway decorating idea for ANYONE with kids. Love!
From ‘Home Bunch‘… this may be my answer to my lifelong dream of having a library all for myself! Since it’s unlikely in today’s small home that you will be able to devote an entire room to books… how about using the least usable room for what should be the most usable things!
From Rachel at ‘Nest Egg‘, via Kristen at ‘The Hunted Interior‘… Need we say more?
Lastly, from ‘Young House Love‘… They used three principles to decorate the hallway here. A calming, pale grey to keep the space looking open and light. Gallery style frames along the walls in light colors draw the eye down. Lastly, some colorful wall art at the end of the hallway makes the space seem less like a bowling alley, and more like a room. Pretty, but never overdone!

Im sorry, we don’t!
You have some great tips for decorating a hallway. I really like your idea of using a ton of picture frames down the hall. My parents actually did that going up their stairs in their home, and the effect is really nice.
I have never seen these decorating tips before, but I really like the white picture frames in the first picture! I also love the idea of having bookshelves on either side of the hallway! I can’t wait to work on these tips, thanks for the inspiration!
