Small homes call for creative solutions. The fact is that you may need to be flexible with furniture and living pieces that can be moved and stored, or even do double duty. Projects with wheels are a natural for small spaces – they are easily moved from room to room without needing the local football team to lift, and they can be rolled out of the way to make more space when necessary. Take a look at these space saving ideas on wheels and see if one (or all!) of them could make your life in a smaller home more efficient, and more pleasant! (I’m voting for the rolling kitchen island for my house!)
Space Saving Ideas & Projects
‘Magnolia Homes‘ is run by Joanna and Chip Gaines of the HGTV show “Fixer Upper”, and they have a really simple project tutorial for you. Their DIY boot tray on wheels is really chic industrial farmhouse, and yet really practical. The tutorial gives a complete supply list as well as instructions. Oh, plus you get to peek around those homes they redo! LOVE Joanna’s style!
This DIY rolling ottoman from ‘Rockler Woodworking‘ is a great example of double duty furniture on wheels. Ok, so you can use this for seating, for storage, as an accent piece… whatever you need it for, then roll it to the next room when you need it there! You can sign up to have them send you a free plan for the whole project.
From our favorite woodworking gal, ‘Ana White‘, are these free plans for this DIY double kitchen island with butcher block. My small kitchen could really use this, especially around holidays. And then you can just roll it out of the way! Oh, and do I see storage? It’s the Holy Grail space saving idea and project for small kitchens!
Love this pipe and butcher block rolling kitchen island from ‘Simplified Building‘. This cart is done with screws and pipe fittings, no welding required!
Our next project is a DIY platform bed from Kristi at ‘Chatfield Court‘. This bed not only has wheels so it can be easily moved, it has storage! Easy to follow tutorial for this simple project.
These DIY rolling toy storage crates from Jackie at ‘Teal and Lime‘ are exactly the space saving ideas you need if you have kids. These would be great under bed storage for anyone as well. Great tutorial, and check out her school of decorating! She is so talented!
Don’t want to build them, or just need other ideas for customizing your own? These rolling storage crates from ‘One King’s Lane‘ have cute sayings and a low profile.
‘Apartment Therapy’ brings us this DIY laundry basket from ‘Country Home Magazine‘. This is really creative because the sides are old, antique screens just screwed together, and a little scrap wood as a bottom base, and casters! Unfortunately, the tutorial link no longer works. If anyone knows where this tutorial is, could you share in comments?
This portable bar project by ‘BHG‘ may be the simplest one yet. Put a coat of paint on an old dresser or desk piece, then add wheels and new hardware! You could even wheel this outside to the deck or patio on warm evenings to serve, without having to go back and forth into the house.
This DIY plumbing pipe dining table tutorial comes to us from Michelle at ‘4 Men, 1 Lady‘. She has a lot of great space saving ideas on her site. Check out this post to see all the info, including where to get your supplies, and what kind of pipe to buy so it won’t rust, Definitely read it through.
Another DIY toy box with casters from ‘This Little Street‘. This one is pretty darn easy folks. Wood crates from Home Depot or the craft store, paint, casters. Done. This would make living room clean up at the end of the day sooooo much easier!
This DIY industrial hallway cart is from Beckie at ‘Infarrantly Creative‘, who we adore. You’ve seen her projects on our sites before, and this is why. She rocks them! We love industrial style, and this cart would cost a LOT of money in any store… Great tutorial!
These last two have no tutorials, but they are so inspiring, we couldn’t leave them out! Found on ‘Bolig Pluss‘, this photo by Maria Svanevik of an amazing Ikea hack rolling storage table caught our eye as pretty special. An Expedit shelving unit wrapped in wood, then wheels added, this space saving idea looks high end.
Lastly, this pallet coffee table from ‘3 Girls, 1 Apartment‘ looks pretty simple to DIY! I actually really like how low this is, it gives a clear view of the room, and that can be really important in a small space!
